Once Upon a Watermelon
Just as they do every year, Disney released candy featuring Disney princesses for Valentine's Day. Let's just say, this year's was a tad insensitive - depicting the white Cinderella character on the vanilla side and the black Tiana character decorating the watermelon flavored side. Yup.
Pairing the white girl with vanilla and the black girl with watermelon should have set off an alarm in someone’s mind. How is it that out of all 10 Disney princesses—only one of which is black—they chose Princess Tiana to sell their watermelon flavored candy?
Defenders of slavery used the watermelon as a symbol of simplicity arguing that African Americans were happy as slaves. They didn’t need the complicated responsibilities of freedom; they just needed some shade and a cool, delicious treat. Perhaps the stereotype linking black people with watermelon is too antiquated and they let this slide? Or maybe the people in charge of marketing for Disney are marketing assholes?
